this is a little surprising—artesian is a lowercase standalone entry in my new oxford american. but some dictionaries list it as proper, and some include it only as part of the two-word phrase artesian well.
Aeolian strings may be another such case. I was pretty shocked when my Scrabble opponent got away with it. I would never have tried it ordinarily, but it was the only word I could 'triangulate' at that point.
ARTESIAN is not in the dictionary??
