Welcome to the Guess My Word blog. This is a place to discuss the words of the day chosen by Joon and Mike. This paragraph is here mostly as spoiler space. Here are today's words:
When I entered my final and correct guess for joon's word, I was thinking, "This one's certainly not in the accepted list; I'm just vamping until something else comes to mind." But there it is!
I'm not sure that a word created for an episode of "The Simpsons" that is not in most dictionaries (or at least not in the first three I checked) is very fair. Unless you've memorized every "Simpsons" episode, how likely are you to come up with Joon's word?
It's not just "one episode of the Simpsons:" The word is well-known in some circles. I've seen it used in jest many times. It's in Wiktionary and the Urban Dictionary. But the wordlist is supposed to be the official Scrabble TWL (tournament word list) and my scrabble game does not accept this word, and it's not in an online version of the list I just checked. So I wonder whether joon sneaked this word into the word list as an April Fool's joke, and did it a day early to double the foolery.
And I've never seen 'The Simpsons' but that's not the issue. Joon claims to use the Scrabble TWL, and if he's planning a bit of foolery, it should at least be on the right day. Perhaps he thought March has 30 days?.....nah.
you know, i had this all counted out, but words get auto-deleted from my queue if they get used by mike before they come up. so this word might just have appeared one day before i intended it. that's what i think happened here. or at least, that's my story and i'm sticking to it.
but really, i don't know what the furor is about. after all, it's a perfectly cromulent word.

Is there such a thing as just one lemming?
Sure, just before the last one goes over the cliff.
DeleteMaybe you're right, it may be a premature April Fools thing..
DeleteAs of 2:30 ET, there are only 13 finishers for joon's word, out of 76 people who started the game.
ReplyDeleteSame slightly stunned reaction here. What word list are we using, exactly?!
