  1. Hi, Joon. Could I suggest a small addition to the "Well done" answer and rating page? Would it be very difficult to add "[X tries]" or something similar in the "Correct solvers for today:" line? I like knowing how I did among the people who got it right, of course, but I am often curious about how many people abandoned a tough word, too.

  2. I like Ric Q's suggestion. This week I had 'gruel' but didn't pull the trigger on grueling; then teeter and even teetotaler, never even considered taking off the -er, since one never says 'teetotal.' And I know I wasn't the only one to get stumped like that.

And it took me forever to get 'heifer' today--although I just made a big contribution to HEIFER International. Doh!

  3. Of course on the first page it tells you how many people have played that word today....

(Hands up for 'gruel' and 'teetotaler' by the way....)

  4. i wavered (even teetered, you might say) on teetotal vs teetotaler. eventually i decided that even though teetotaler is more common, teetotal by itself is a legitimate standalone verb that people do use. perhaps i got it wrong. i have no such compunctions about gruel vs grueling, which are totally different words to me sharing no common meaning. "gruel" is not a verb, and "grueling" is an adjective only.

and yes, glenn is right about the front page. obviously i can't control for people who play the word multiple times, or even click on "i give up" multiple times (instead of clicking the link for view leaderboard), but the data is there for you to see.

  5. Of course it's on the first page; I just wanted it to be on the second page, too. For example: I check my performance late in the day on Joon's word, then switch to Mike's word by selecting "Mike" in the first pulldown list. Presto, the page changes to the solvers of Mike's word -- but without going through Mike's challenge page.
So: I would like it on page two, too, to boot. [sic]

  6. i'm going to have to deny that request. if you want to know, it's not that hard to make one more click to go back to the front page.

  7. Because of the rankings on correct solvers, it is hard to know how many there actually were. This means we don't really know how many played but gave up. Usually if I get stumped after hitting 20, I don't continue to flail around.

Joon, I don't think anyone had a beef about gruel and grueling; the teetotal was rather a different situation. (I didn't get either word that day; I thought I should have gotten 'grueling,' but I'd never have tried 'teetotal.')
