  1. The first six solvers tried "bowdlerize" before getting the right answer.

  2. Separate observation: I just noticed that 23 people apparently played the game, but there are only 7 names in the leaderboard. It would be nice to see in the leaderboard display the number of game players, especially the number of successful solvers who didn't leave a name. (I suppose there are a lot of ways the counts could go wrong.)

  3. @Danchall -- I asked about this on 11/22; Joon turned me down then, but perhaps you carry more weight with him than I do ;{)
Also: It took approximately EIGHT (8) MINUTES for me to get in between BOWDLERIZE and BOWED. Wow.

  4. i'll stand by my word choice today. i've never seen this verb used in the active voice, but the adjective bowdlerized is quite common. still, i'm sorry that people seem to be grumpy about it.

dan's suggestion is different from ric's and it would add actual information that isn't available elsewhere. on the other hand, it would mean i'd have to track that other information. sounds like a non-trivial amount of extra work.

  5. first, this is a great word, so no complaints.

the bah (from me) and the aarghs and fuuuu from others are probably out of frustration 'cos the brain moves away from bowdlerize once it is rejected and starts scanning for other words in the vicinity. i personally thought bowdlerize was on the money, and once rejected, i HAD to look for a word that was as good. after staring at bowdlerize and bowel for over a minute, typed in bowdlerized .... and the bah had to be entered in protest! :)

  6. @Joon -- Hm? I guess I wasn't clear on 11/22. I wanted the leaderboard to include the number of people who had played the game (successfully or unsuccessfully) as of the time of display. Isn't this what Dan is asking for?

  7. Ah, I see the difference. Ignore previous message.

  8. And I had bowdlerize, could think of nothing between it and bowed, and gave up, never having even considered bowdlerized. Argh!

  9. I would say I use 'bowdlerize' about as often as I use 'bowdlerized,' actually. It's a great word that carries a lot of meaning (denotative and connotative) and best of all, it has an interesting etymology.

Having said that, though, plainly it was very difficult for me to come up with adding the 'd' once 'bowdlerize' was rejected. This is my failure, not the fault of the secret word, but I think it indicates that your supposition (about usage) was not quite on the money. (I think of 'bowdlerized' as a verb form, not an adjective, and I seldom try changing the tense.)
