Welcome to the Guess My Word blog. This is a place to discuss the words of the day chosen by Joon and Mike. This paragraph is here mostly as spoiler space. Here are today's words:
I did the same as Elaine--I've never heard a thermos called a dewar, so the word meant nothing to me and I would simply never have guessed it. I don't know about anyone else, but the fun of the game plummets when its a word I've never heard, since it's like guessing a series of random letters. I just hope tomorrow's word is less obscure.
Thanks, Joon. I usually do click on through, though I used Google yesterday. The 'Dewar flask' had a nice diagram, etc. Like Lane, I've absolutely never heard a thermos called a dewar, not even when I lived in Europe and spent time in GB. I also think the fun plummets when there is a prefix like non-....endless word list of possibilities. I gave up after noncom because my word count was pretty high by then.
Spent most of these solves just sitting there....running the alphabet...
ReplyDeleteand I still don't know what DEWAR is except a Scotch I don't drink.
a dewar, named for scottish physicist sir james dewar, is a thermally insulated flask. you may know it by the trademarked name thermos.
Deleteanyway, when you give up, the "my word was" text is a link to the dictionary definition. so you can learn stuff.
