  1. Re Mike's word today (no pun intended), I believe the solving community is always a bit put off by re-, in-, un-, dis- and similar word formations. It is like going through the whole process twice.

  2. This re- word didn't bother me much because it's a concept that could be an uninflected word. We recharge batteries without thinking that we've charged them before. It means "initialize" in a sense, like "rewind." It's also the case that all these trivial re-words are available to help navigate the space.

Then again, I was surprised to find it as the answer. I chose the word because it seemed to be near the midpoint of recede and recollect, to chop the range in half rather than to guess.

In contrast, when I was between calorie and calzone, as I was typing calumny I had a strong hunch this was the answer.

  3. By the way, to taunt me, my CAPTCHA word for the previous post was RECOUSCH.

  4. I only know the word 'calumny' because writers of musicals seem to love the word! In the song "Thank Goodness" from 'Wicked', "with her calumnies and lies!"

I'm sure it's in another too, but I can't seem to pull it out of my brain.

  5. I'll chime in with an anti-prefix vote - (Of course I'm at the bottom of the list right now with huge number of guesses.) I don't care how often a re- or un- word is used, the meaning is "again" or "not" and in that way it's much like using a plural. I think we do think of batteries being charged, and we do wind tapes.
(I don't know what "navigate the space" means either - what am I missing?)

  6. well, the jeopardy mention seems to have had some (massively undesirable) effect on the leaderboard, but none on the comment thread (yet). we'll see if anyone sticks around tomorrow.

  7. The more we ignore those trolls the sooner they'll go away.

  8. I wondered when this might happen. Day 7 it is.

I think it's fine if the new players stick around. The one-hit wonders, though, not so much.

  9. oh, of course. i do want new players to play; that's at least half the reason i mentioned it. (the other half is that i had to say something. 7 episodes of jeopardy makes for a lot of inane chit-chat.)

  10. When I played Mike's word, my very first guess was "charge".

If only I had thought to add a "re" to that!

  11. I wonder if it's possible to disable 'single entry' solves on GMW? I recall we had a big spate of (junior high?) kids at one point; they disappeared after about a week. Hope this works the same way....

  12. Just to chime in as someone new to this site: I'm glad to have discovered it and am very pleased Joon mentioned it on "Jeopardy!" yesterday. I was at first dismayed by all the people who seemed to have guessed the word immediately, and I'm glad to know that's not the norm here, as it renders the results pretty meaningless. Anyway, I look forward to enjoying this game as long as it's around--it's definitely good as a vocabulary stretcher!

  13. welcome lane! glad you could join us. i'm hoping an organic solution (i.e. me sitting around and not actively doing anything about it) will do the trick, as people who don't really care about playing the game will get tired of it pretty quickly.
