I was unwilling to add the -ed as the very next guess....
I agree, but later it occurred to me that we seldom see 'dishevel' itself. It's like being 'ept' or 'ane,' eh?
it's not exactly like ept, but it is a lot like beleaguer. the adjectival form is much, much more common than the active verb.
