Welcome to the Guess My Word blog. This is a place to discuss the words of the day chosen by Joon and Mike. This paragraph is here mostly as spoiler space. Here are today's words:

mike's word: atherosclerosis
joon's word: stoichiometry

Discuss.

  1. Wow. Bombed on both of these.
Joon's feels unfair--very specialized. I stopped between stodgy and stolid and just bailed. Now I am glad I did not spend any more time on it.

Should have gotten Mike's, I think, but I was short of ath- words after athlete and atheist.

I'm hoping for howls of protest. Meanwhile, kudos to DaveK.

  2. First time I remember playing this when neither word was one I have ever run across before. I hope there aren't too many days like this, since it takes the fun out of playing when the words are this obscure, at least for me.

  4. interesting. my word (obviously) was familiar to me; i learned it in high school chemistry. that seems fair enough; doesn't everybody take chemistry in high school? i haven't had much occasion to use the word in the past two decades (never took any chem in college), but it's such a cool word that it stuck with me.

i'm pretty i've never seen mike's before; i gave up between athenaeum and athirst. i've heard of arteriosclerosis but not athero- anything. i see from wikipedia that atherosclerosis is a special case of arteriosclerosis. perhaps i should know this word, as it does seem to be (a technical term for) a very common medical condition; at any rate, i'm glad i know it now.

lane, i agree that it takes the fun out of playing. hopefully the fun of learning new words means there is still some fun to be had.

as for two technical terms on the same day, i think that's just bad luck. mike and i maintain our word lists independently, of course, so that we can play each other's words.

    1. Not everyone does take Chemistry in high school, but I did, though I have no memory of stoichiometry ever being mentioned. But even if it was, high school chemistry was almost 40 years ago for me, and since I'm not a scientist, there are a few things said in that class that have fallen by the wayside, I'm sure.

But yes, it is fun to learn new words (though today's two may never pass my way again), and I'm sure the concurrence of two technical scientific terms on the same day is a rare one. At least I hope so!

  5. Joon,
Not everyone takes chemistry in HS (or college.) It's by no means difficult to work around subjects one dislikes, and physical sciences--yuck--were anathema to me. (Now, I would say I probably just had poor teachers who failed to excite the students on these subjects.) College, managed to do the same for my BS, taking extra maths and psych and zoology, thus avoiding things like chemistry, physics, and even foreign language (4 yrs in HS was enough.)
